Loving Bierstadt: Bierstadt was one of the great early American painters in the mid and late 19th century who travelled into unknown western landscapes; the paintings celebrate the majesty of the vast Western interior, untouched by humans. Bierstadt and his contemporaries are great favorites of mine and the painting is an homage to the idea of unknown and untraveled places. They were part of the Hudson River school of art.
